In the painting, Violation of Spring, a discarded Coca-Cola can floats in the pond of an otherwise bucolic spring landscape. The beauty of the landscape draws the viewer in, expecting to see a pristine image. But upon a closer look, one is repulsed by the trash, evidence of urban blight. I could have painted only the pristine image, but the Coca-Cola can, a violation of spring, documents the contemporary environment as I experience it.
